Baking Memories: Gingerbread house competition at Holiday Festival of Lights open to all
The Holiday Festival of Lights officially kicks off Nov. 8 at James Island County Park, but Lowcountry residents are invited to be a part of the magic now. The annual Gingerbread Competition has become a beloved tradition, bringing in creations from the young and the old, the skilled and the novice, and everyone in between. The Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission (CCPRC) invites everyone in the area and beyond to be part of this year’s Holiday Festival of Lights Gingerbread House Competition.
Entries are not limited to an architectural structure, such as a house, train station or lighthouse, etc. Competitors are welcome to let their imaginations take control. Interested in participating? Visit www.ccprc.com/gingerbread for more information, including rules and procedures.
The 2013 categories and age divisions are:
Category 1: Original Entries (“Handmade Creations”) - The main structure (such as roof and walls) must be constructed primarily of handmade gingerbread. No gingerbread kits or kit components allowed in this category. Main structure cannot be constructed using primarily graham crackers, cookies or similar pre-made product. Age divisions for the Original Category are Adults age 17 and older, Youth age 8-16, and Parent-Child (child ages 3-7).
Category 2: Kit Entries - Gingerbread house kits or kit components are allowed. This category is inclusive of all ages.
Entries will be judged based on creativity, overall appearance, difficulty and craftsmanship. The top two entries in each category will receive a choice of a CCPRC Gold Pass or Super Splash Pass. Additionally, all entries in the Original Entries category will be judged by a team of local artisans, with a grand prize winner being presented a cash award of $200, and the runner-up a cash award of $100. Winning entries will be displayed during the Holiday Festival of Lights. The award ceremony for the top winners will take place at the opening evening of this year’s Holiday Festival of Lights, on Nov. 8 at 6:30 p.m. at Santa’s Stage at James Island County Park.
The competition is now open, and registration is required by Friday, Nov. 1. Registration is $5. Check-in for all entries will be held Monday, Nov. 4 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at Edisto Hall within James Island County Park.
