Gators roll in battle of unbeatens

Rob Gantt/Gazette Goose Creek Gators quarterback Dantez Bennamon passed for 111 yards and threw a touchdown in a 48-7 win over previously unbeaten Beaufort on Friday.

There’s being unbeaten and there’s actually being good.

Beaufort was the prior and Goose Creek the latter.

The Gators rolled up 500-plus yards of offense and coasted to a 48-7 victory over the Eagles in a battle of unbeatens on Friday night.

Goose Creek moved to 6-0 on the season and extended its win streak to 32 games. Beaufort fell to 5-1.

Gators running back Tyrik Johnson scored on runs of 53, 3 and 15 yards while fullback Evan McField added 148 yards on the ground in the blowout.

“We knew they had some confidence,” Gators coach Chuck Reedy said, “but we didn’t feel like they had beaten anybody of consequence … the game was never really in doubt.”

The Gators built a 21-0 lead in the first half and broke it open with a 20-point third quarter.

Caleb Kinlaw went 54 yards for the Gators’ first touchdown and Johnson followed with a 53-yard scoring scamper to make it 14-0 with 4:45 left in the first quarter.

Gators quarterback Dantez Bennamon tossed a 25-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Barnes to make it 21-0 late in the second quarter. Bennamon finished 7 of 16 for 111 yards.

Beaufort’s lone touchdown came on a 16-yard connection from quarterback Ben Vaigneur to Stephen Baggett with six seconds left in the first half.

But the Gators got that back on Darin McNeal’s 12-yard touchdown run with 9:21 remaining in the third quarter.

Johnson’s second and third scoring runs gave the Gators a 41-7 lead after three quarters. Inside linebacker Daylin Julius had 10 total tackles, while Omar McRae made an interception. Outside linebacker Shaquille Salley pounced on a fumble. K.J. Wood added eight total stops.

Backup quarterback Dominique Jefferson came in and tossed an 18-yard touchdown pass to Jordan McElveen to cap the scoring.

Defensively, the Gators limited Beaufort to 153 yards and recorded two turnovers.

The Gators travel to Carolina Forest this Friday to take on the 1-5 Panthers in Myrtle Beach.The two squads have a pair of common opponents. The Panthers lost to Beaufort 49-35 and Fort Dorchester 62-14. Goose Creek defeated Fort Dorchester 49-28 on Sept. 20.
