Berkeley County officials, along with members of the Berkeley and Summerville Chambers of Commerce, meet with officials from MeadWestvaco Corporation and Blanchard & Calhoun Commercial Corporation to commemorate Summerville’s first Marriott property, a 96-room Courtyard by Marriott, scheduled to open in July 2014. MeadWestvaco Corporation and Blanchard and Calhoun Commercial Corporation broke ground Sept. 23 on the area’s first Marriott property.
The Courtyard by Marriott, located off Hwy. 17A and Interstate 26, will stand in the shadow of the first phase of the Nexton community, a pedestrian campus environment encompassing Class A offices, retail, restaurants and multi-family residential components.
Ken Seeger, president of MWV Community Development and Land Management, said the new hotel is tip of the iceberg for the development.
“With Nexton’s first Class A office building under construction and SCRA, Carolina Ale House and The Parks apartments soon to be under way, Nexton is truly coming to life,” said Seeger. “This marks a watershed for the Summerville region. We’re very proud to be a part of it.”
Berkeley County Supervisor Dan Davis said the benefits of road improvements are being seen.
“Seven years ago we began this massive road improvements project from Jedburg Road, Sheep Island, and on down to here in order to bring new business and industry to Berkeley County and the tri-county area,” Davis said. “All the road improvements have led us to this day. This is the fruit of that labor. It’s nice to see the results of all that hard work.”
Vic Mills is CEO of Blanchard and Calhoun Commercial.
“We are delighted to begin our second hotel in the Charleston area in a little more than a year,” he said. “The Summerville Courtyard by Marriott will be the first in the Southeast to have the new Courtyard room design.”
Mills also announced a second hotel construction project, an extended stay Residence Inn, another Marriott product currently in the design phase that should begin construction sometime in 2014.
The Courtyard by Marriott’s design is revolutionary, Mills added, and will incorporate rigorous environmental standards to reduce energy and water consumption. The building will feature 96 rooms and state of the art amenities to include a bistro, lounge, outdoor pool, exercise room, business center, market pantry and artwork from local artists.
“This will be like no Courtyard you’ve ever experienced,” he said. “The exterior and interior design will be very unique to Courtyard.”
The Courtyard by Marriott will be the first of two hotels developed with the partnership of MeadWestvaco Corporation and Blanchard and Calhoun Commercial.
With over 900 Courtyard by Marriott hotels worldwide, a July 2014 completion date is planned for the new Summerville hotel.
“Look around you,” Dan Davis said at the conclusion of his remarks. “This is going to be the new focal point of the tri-county region.”
