The Goose Creek volleyball team is 5-1-1 through the first part of the season.
The Lady Gators take on Berkeley on Wednesday, Sept. 11 before traveling to West Ashley for the Region 7-AAAA opener.
“West Ashley returns almost everyone from their team from last year,” GCHS coach Jay Watterworth said. “They have a new coach who used to play for the College of Charleston. This will be a tough match and one we need to win if we want to continue to come in second in the region.”
The Gators lean heavily on senior captains K.K. Wilson and Diemend Richardson.
“We have a pretty young team,” he said. “We play two freshmen and three sophomores. We will rely heavily on our outside hitters and hope that our young players develop quickly, which they should because they will see so much on-court experience.”
Goose Creek’s latest victories came last week when it swept Timberland and Beaufort in non-region tilts.
Sophomore outside hitter Shakayia Wilson had 19 kills in those two matches while Richardson made 32 assists.
On the same day they play West Ashley, the Lady Gators are set to meet Charleston Math & Science also.
Crosstown rivals Stratford and Goose Creek will then hookup on Sept. 17 at Stratford.
