The 43rd annual Sertoma Classic will be held Thursday and Friday at The Citadel’s Johnson Hagood Stadium. The event has long been recognized as the unofficial start of football season in the Lowcountry.
Each day will be highlighted by a pair of two-quarter scrimmages between some of the better squads in the area. Other schools will get one period under the lights.
Stratford and Hanahan will be in the featured matchups on Thursday. The Hawks tangle with Wando and Stratford takes on James Island.
On Friday, Goose Creek is in one of the highlighted matchups against Berkeley. The Gators and Stags close out the event.
In all, 28 teams will participate in Sertoma.
Kickoff for the first quarter of both nights is scheduled for 5:45 p.m.
Tickets for the Classic are $10 and can be purchased in advance from cheerleaders for participating schools. Parking is limited so Sertoma Club members recommend carpooling.
There is a $5 parking fee for official Sertoma Football Classic lots: Holiday Alumni Center Lot (Hagood Ave. and Congress St.), Stoney Field Lot (Hagood Ave. and Fishburne St.), Altman Center Lot (Fishburne St. and Hagood Ave.) and MUSC Lot (Lockwood Dr.).
Nearby parking will also be available non-Sertoma lots: Joe Riley Stadium Lot (Lockwood Dr.) and Brittlebank Park (Lockwood Dr.)
Since it was chartered in 1951, the Sertoma Club of Charleston has as its motto “kids helping kids,” which expresses its focus on Service to Mankind through the betterment of the lives of local youth by promoting health, education, freedom and democracy.
In the 40-plus years the Classic has been held, Sertoma has been able to return over $3,500,000 to local community charities and has helped high school cheerleaders purchase team uniforms, etc.
The full-blown start of high school football season will be Aug. 30, though some schools start in what is known as Week 0 on this Friday.
