Former Stratford and Charleston Southern pitcher Ryan Gunther is excelling in relief for the Danville Braves, the rookie league affiliate of the Atlanta Braves in the Appalachian League.
In his last 10 appearances since July 10, Gunther has a 1.69 earned-run average. He’s fanned 15 batters in 16 innings during the stretch.
He last threw on Aug. 15, tossing three innings and striking out three batters while allowing one hit. On the season, he has thrown in 14 games and has a 3.38 ERA with 24 strikeouts in 21.1 innings pitched.
Gunther was chosen in the 12th round of the first-year player draft back in June.
• Former Stratford and Francis Marion standout Justin Greene continues to power the Mobile Bay Bears in hitting. He leads the Double-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks with a .311 batting average, good enough for the Southern League lead.
He’s also stolen 30 bases and has eight triples to go along with 19 doubles and 28 RBIs.
As of Monday, he had 105 hits in 103 games.
• Former Stratford star and current Seattle Mariners first baseman Justin Smoak is having a hot August for the American League West Club. He was 19 of 59 for the month (.322) after Sunday’s game.
He’s got five homers during the stretch.
On the season, he’s batting .270 with 14 home runs and 34 RBIs.
• Former Stratford and Citadel southpaw Matt Crim is playing with the Southern Illinois Miners in the Frontier League of independent baseball.
He is 1-1 with the Miners with 16 strikeouts in 20.2 innings pitched. He has a 5.22 ERA.
