I read the article in the August 8 edition of The Gazette on Special delivery about a postal vehicle that tried to move a trailer that was blocking the mailbox.† While this was the wrong approach, you must understand that the mail carriers have a job to do that does not entail them to get out of the mail truck for any reason other then to deliver a package or obtain a signature.
If the mail carrier gets hurt out on the route, whether it be a sprained ankle or a fall, if they did not have to get out of the truck for any of those instances, the injury is on them. People don't understand this.
In many subdivisions the mailbox is a magnet for junk being put to the road or cars blocking them.† If I am not mistaken, Goose Creek has an ordinance to not block the mailboxes.† The rule is 20 feet to and from the mailbox needs to be kept clear on delivery times.† Postal Carriers have a job to do just like anybody else and people need to realize that blocking the box prohibits them from serving the community.
In subdivisions where there is a lot of development and building going on, these workers constantly block the mailboxes with equipment and personal vehicles.† While we understand that they have a job to do, we in turn also have a job to do.
Goose Creek needs to back up their ordinance for the safety and swift service of the mail carriers.
Also people in cul de sacs tend to park straight at their house and the carrier does not have a safe line of travel around to serve the other boxes. Trash cans and yard debris are always around mailboxes.
So remember, for the safety of everyone, pile your junk somewhere else and remember the 20 foot to and from rule.
