Berkeley return to AAAA a possibility

  • Wednesday, August 14, 2013

Berkeley High School Principal Steven Steele said the Berkeley Stags’ return to Class AAAA sports is a real possibility by 2014.
“We’re in the appeal process right now but our chances look really good,” Steele said on Monday. “We have to write a letter to the Class AAA principals asking to be let out and then find a place in Class AAAA for them to put us.”
While not guaranteeing a done deal on Berkeley’s return to Class AAA athletics, the appeal process was an administrative one, Steele looks for the Stags to play in either Region 8AAAA or 7AAAA.
“We are looking forward to getting back to playing Goose Creek, Summerville and West Ashley again,” Steele said.
The Stags last played in Class AAAA Division II during the 2009-2010 school year where they won the state championship in football under Jerry Brown in 2009.
“There is nothing like Class AAAA football,” said Stags Athletic Director Jeff Cruce.
The move to Class AAAA would ease the travel burden on student athletes having to drive as far away as Hilton Head to play weeknight games especially in non-football sports.
Also, competing with other Berkeley County schools such as traditional rivals Goose Creek and Summerville will help improve the gate over schools such as Hilton Head or Orangeburg-Wilkinson.
“It’s not a done deal yet but we’re getting there,” Steele said.
