Free tax prep program seeks volunteers

The AARP Tax-Aide program in Berkeley County is seeking volunteers to train as tax counselors to assist at its Goose Creek site.
This program provides free personal income tax counseling and electronically filed tax return preparation to low and middle income tax payers, with special attention to those age 60 and older. Last tax season we assisted hundreds, and with other counties, thousands of our neighbors.
Volunteers of all backgrounds and ages are welcome, and you do not need to be an AARP member to volunteer nor do you need to be a retiree. Familiarity with the IRS tax forms is helpful but the availability of a laptop computer is a must.
There is an IRS qualified training program where tax counselors receive extensive free tax training and become IRS certified by passing an IRS test. There will also be additional training in computer tax preparation. Training materials will be available after Thanksgiving 2013.
Counselors will help customers one-on-one at tax sites and are expected to be available for at least four hours per week during the Feb. 1 – April 15, 2014 tax season. It's a great way to learn new skills, assist in helping others, and become more involved in your community.
Register with AARP at login.aarp.org/online-community/loginform.action before Sept. 15 to get training materials and join our Tax-Aide Team, or call Pat Merriam at (843) 270-7881.

First Steps services include Parents as Teachers, the Nurse Family Partnership program, ABC Scholarships, Imagination Library, Child Care Trainings and Early Care Identification and referral services.
Staff and board members will be on hand to answer questions about Berkeley First Steps, its services and goals for the future.  There will be raffles and food. For more information call (843) 863-3030.
