The Goose Creek Post 166 Junior team just put the finishing touches on a great season with an appearance in the state tournament last week.
The Post 166 Juniors placed third in the eight-team event held in Rock Hill, going 2-2. They defeated Belton (11-4) and Dillon (7-5) in the tournament and had losses against Florence (14-4) and Conway (10-4).
Post 166 finished 13-4 on the summer and captured the League 1 title.
“Overall I am very pleased with what our team accomplished,” Post 166 juniors coach Mike Knight said. “Both losses in the state tournament were to the teams that played in the championship. I think this experience will give these kids confidence they can take with them to high school ball. This is one of the best groups of kids I have coached. They had no attitudes, just showed up to do what they were asked to do.”
Goose Creek won the first game against Belton with a combination of good pitching by Jamison Mobbs and Chris Hitchman. Jacob Thompson and Kyle Keys had two RBIs apiece, while Mobbs, Andrew Preston and Hitchman had some timely hits as well.
Coach Knight said not a whole lot went right in the lopsided loss to Florence but his team rebounded against Dillon the next day.
Bryce Jonason pitched a complete game and got the victory from the bump. Hits by Mobbs, Justin Walker, Thompson, and Mike White helped produce the runs.
The loss to Conway brought an end to the season. Mobbs had a homer for Post 166 in that one.
