White delivers in clutch to lift Post 166
SUMTER - Mike White's two-out RBI single in the bottom of the ninth kept Goose Creek Post 166 alive in the American Legion state tournament on Sunday, propelling the local club to a 5-4 win over Murrells Inlet at Riley Park.
Post 166 (22-11) faces elimination again on Monday against Greenville. Greenville lost to Sumter 11-8 in 13 innings earlier Monday.
Post 166 got out to a 2-0 lead after three innings. Tyler Rio had an RBI single in the first and Zach Lavery added an RBI single in the third inning.
Murrells Inlet tied it with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings and took the lead with a run in the eighth, chasing Post 166 starter Cody Smith. It added to its lead with another run in the ninth off reliever Cody Maw.
Smith allowed eight hits and three runs over seven innings, striking out five and walking none.
Murrells Inlet led 4-2 going into the bottom of the ninth but Post 166 loaded the bases with no outs and pulled within 4-3 on Davon Higgins' groundout to set the stage for White, who came up as a pinch hitter with runners on second and third. He had only nine at-bats all season but came through with a single to left to win it.
White's hit on a 2-0 count scored Rio from third base and the speedy Taylor Morrison from second base.
Cody Maw was credited with the win for Goose Creek but did more in left field earlier. He threw out a pair of runners at the plate and snagged a line drive out of the air on what looked it was going to be a base hit. Maw got the final six hits, allowing two hits and one unearned run.
Christian Sillanpaa and Rio had three hits each for Post 166. Austin Timm had two hits.
Rio is slated to take the hill for Goose Creek on Monday.
