Murrells Inlet scored an unearned run in the top of the ninth inning and dropped Goose Creek Post 166, 9-8, in the opening game of a second round American Legion playoff series on Monday at Goose Creek High School.
Game 2 was set for Tuesday at Socastee High School and the series will return to GCHS on Wednesday for Game 3. If necessary, Game 4 is slated for Socastee while Game 5 would be back at GCHS.
“We gave it a battle,” Post 166 coach Dave Holt said. “You’d like to get the ones at home. We’re going to have to get after it (on Tuesday).
The loss had the added sting of almost being a tremendous comeback victory for Goose Creek. Post 166 (20-8) rallied from an 8-2 deficit to tie the game with six runs in the seventh inning but a throwing error in the ninth helped Post 178 pull out the win.
Cody Smith was 3 for 5 with two doubles and two RBIs for Post 166, while Christian Sillanpaa added two hits and a double.
Chris Zurcher took the loss in relief for Post 166, tossing two innings and striking out four. The lone run he surrendered was unearned.
Charles Nicholson tossed two-plus innings of relief to earn the victory for Murrells Inlet.
Post 178 seemed in complete control after plating four runs in the top of the seventh off reliever Tyler Rio to lead 8-2 but Post 166 was able to rally. Zach Lavery’s two-run single made it 8-5 and Cody Smith’s bloop double down the right field line pushed in two runs to even the score.
Lavery threw the first six innings for Post 166, scattering nine hits and walking four. He gave up four earned runs. Rio gave up two hits and walked two. Three of the four runs he allowed were earned.
