Tekac earns spot in Olympic development camp
One of the area’s top high school soccer players will be in Tuscaloosa, Ala. this week competing with and against some of the nation’s other premier players in the Region III Olympic Development Camp.
Tyler Tekac, a rising junior at Stratford High School, is one of 19 participants on the South Carolina team. Other Region III states are Texas, Tennessee, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Oklahoma and North Carolina.
US Youth Soccer is divided into four regions. The camp begins on Wednesday and ends on Sunday.
The process started back in November with tryouts. The players were narrowed down to approximately 36 kids and two teams were made. Those squads participated in a sub-regional tournament in Winston Salem and continued to train on a monthly basis. The final group was selected in June.
This past high school season, Tekac scored 14 goals for the Knights and made the all-Region 7-AAAA team after making all-county as a freshman.
Also, this spring Tyler was named as a Development Pool player for the South Carolina United Battery Academy U-16 squad. This allows Tekac the opportunity to practice with the full squad and have an opportunity to be called up to play tournaments if needed.
