Lavery wins in first start this summer
Zach Lavery struck out 10 batters over six innings and gave up just three hits in his first start of the season, leading Post 166 to a 10-7 road win over Moncks Corner on Friday, June 21.
Both runs he gave up were unearned. He had previously thrown four innings in an exhibition game vs. Cary, N.C. this season.
In 2012, Lavery was 6-0 with two saves and a 1.70 ERA and just recently rejoined the team.
It was the fifth straight league victory for Goose Creek.
Sean Freeland and Chris Zurcher collected three hits apiece to lead the offensive onslaught, while Lavery and Christian Sillanpaa had two each. Post 166 pounded out 14 hits in the game.
Post 166 led 6-0 in the third inning and improved to 11-5 overall and 8-3 in league play. The record includes two forfeits from the James Island/West Ashley team, which has disbanded.
Moncks Corner took advantage of two infield errors and a walk to score a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the third inning.
But Post 166 strung together four hits in the top of the fourth inning, plating four more runs for all the runs it needed.
Goose Creek 3, Beaufort 2
Cody Smith scattered three hits over five innings and fanned eight batters as Goose Creek Post 166 picked up a 3-2 road victory over Beaufort on Thursday, June 20.
Reliever Chris Zurcher threw the final four scoreless innings, giving up just one hit and striking out seven batters, to earn the save.
Austin Timm was 2 for 4 with an RBI while Chris Singleton drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
Timm scored on an error in the first inning to give Post 166 a 1-0 lead and Singleton’s sac fly in the second made it 2-0.
Beaufort trimmed its deficit in half in the third inning but Timm’s RBI single answered to make it 3-1.
Beaufort’s lone other run came in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Zurcher navigated through some threatening situations in his time on the mound. He stranded the bases loaded in the sixth and Beaufort had runners on the corners in both the eighth and ninth innings.
