Hundreds of kittens at Animal Society need homes now

  • Tuesday, June 25, 2013

Charleston Animal Society is offering free adoptions at its shelter from Wednesday, June 26 through Sunday, June 30. As the area’s largest rescue organization and leading adoption organization in South Carolina, Charleston Animal Society finds homes for every healthy or treatable animal that enters its sheltering system.

With a record number of kittens and more than 800 total animals in its system (both in-house and in foster homes), the animal society is beyond its capacity and the animals are in dire need of homes. With help from PetSmart Charities, Charleston Animal Society aims to place 300 animals during the campaign.

“Traditionally, we see a great leap in the number of kittens coming into our system during the summer months, but never before has our situation been so urgent,” explains Joe Elmore, chief executive officer of Charleston Animal Society.

“We don’t turn animals away nor do we import highly desirable animals from other areas at the expense of local animals.”

“In order to realize our goal of making Charleston a No Kill community by 2015, we need the public’s help in providing these wonderful animals a new home,” Elmore said. “Our rallying cry is ‘make room for one more in your heart and in your home.’”

“Last June, we had in excess of 600 animals in our system, which was our all-time record. Right now, we have already exceeded that number by more than 200 animals. These totals have been driven up by the exceptional number of kittens brought to us, and we are committed to making sure they all find good homes.”

All animals available for adoption through Charleston Animal Society come spayed or neutered, are fully vaccinated, microchipped and are eligible for a free health exam from most veterinarians. To get a jumpstart on the campaign, PetSmart gift cards will be given to the first 50 adopters on Wednesday.

Animals eligible for fee-waived adoptions are available at Charleston Animal Society’s animal care campus at 2455 Remount Rd. in North Charleston. The shelter is open:

Wednesday, June 26 – Sunday June 30 from 10 a.m. - 7 p.m.

Friday: noon - 5:30 p.m.
