It was the first basketball camp at Goose Creek High School for coach Blake Hall but it had the energy of an event that has been around a while.
“I was very delighted with the turnout,” said Hall, the Gators boys basketball coach. “It was a positive start.”
He estimated about 50 kids participated in the camp over four days last week. The camp was for grades 1-8 and was broken up daily with two sessions. Emphasis was placed on skill development.
“Hopefully that number will grow,” Hall said. “We’re trying to teach the kids the game and the skills they need to work on to be a better basketball player at the next level.”
The camp was attended by kids from areas all over the Lowcountry not just Goose Creek, Hall said.
“We had a good bit from all over,” he added. “We had them from Moncks Corner, Cross, Goose Creek and a couple from North Charleston. It was a pretty diverse group.”
Hall’s team was one of the most accomplished squads in the state last winter, going 22-5 and playing for the Class AAAA championship. The Gators also won Region 7-AAAA and the Lower State title.
This past weekend the Gators varsity and JV teams went a combined 13-0 in games at Charleston Southern’s team camp.
