Alcoa, Santee Cooper agree to extend deadline

  • Thursday, June 6, 2013

Ongoing negotiations between Alcoa Mt. Holly and Santee Cooper will continue: the two have reached an agreement to extend Mt. Holly's June 30, 2013 power contract deadline for six months to Dec. 31, 2013.
The extension allows Mt. Holly and Santee Cooper to continue discussions regarding the development of a post-2015 power contract. It requires the Mt. Holly plant to notify Santee Cooper if the current contract, which expires in December of 2015, will be renewed.
Over the past two years, Alcoa officials have stated that the plant would close if a new energy rate is not reached.
