Good Knight! Stratford sweeps Gators
The Stratford soccer teams capped their regular seasons on a high note last Thursday, sweeping crosstown rival Goose Creek.
The Lady Knights won 4-1 while the Stratford boys team won 9-0. It gave the teams momentum heading into the postseason.
The girls, who finished third in the region, were set to travel to Beaufort on Monday, while the boys were to host Summerville. The Knights were second in Region 7 behind Wando, the No. 1 team in the country.
“I thought that Goose Creek started the game more ready to play than us,” said Lady Knights coach Peter Heusinger, whose team improved to 5-11. “Despite the score of our first game (a 9-0 Stratford win), they played with a lot of heart and were competitive the whole game. We started out flat and they were very aggressive. I was proud of our girls for being able to turn things around after Goose Creek scored. The girls that came off the bench did a good job of getting the other girls back in the game …
“I think the rivalry between the two schools helps make these games competitive.”
Chrisia Class, Essence Buie, Heather Blaszak and Grace Smith scored goals for the Lady Knights.
Maddie Ellison had the lone goal for the Lady Gators.
In the boys game, the Knights scored two goals in the first 10 minutes and coasted to a 9-0 victory. Stratford upped its record to 14-6 overall and finished the region slate 6-2. The Knights also defeated Goose Creek 5-0 earlier in the season.
Luke Wardman and Tristan Ray had two goals apiece to lead the Knights, while Tyler Tekac, Zach Wombwell, Felix Martinez, Logan Wright and Justin Overstreet had one each.
Overstreet and Taylor Riser combined for the shutout in goal.
A night earlier, Stratford defeated Cane Bay 5-0 behind three goals from Tristan Ray. Tekac and Wright also had goals, while Overstreet and Riser combined for the shutout.
