The Stratford baseball team made a slight improvement in the wins column this season, finishing 9-9 overall and 3-5 in Region 7-AAAA. They missed the playoffs and ended the regular season with a 14-7 loss to rival Goose Creek last week.
A year ago, the Knights were 8-13 and 2-6.
The good news is they are set to bring back all but three seniors for next season. Included in the group moving on, though, is outfielder Michael Punteney.
Punteney led the team with a .423 batting average and drove in 11 runs. Chase Fowler, a pitcher/infielder, was also a senior.
Fowler batted .275 and had the team’s lone home run. He was the winning pitcher in two games and posted a 3.66 earned-run average. Angel Guerrero, a pitcher/outfielder, was the team’s other senior.
The top players statistically set to return are freshman infielder J.D. Davis, junior outfielder Taylor Morrison, junior catcher Jordan Lacavera and sophomore pitcher/infielder Eddie Hiott.
Davis batted .333 with 14 RBIs and scored 11 runs. Morrison also had a .333 batting average, drove in 16 runs and stole five bases.
Hiott batted .294 and had a 4-3 pitching record. He fashioned a 4.47 ERA and fanned 48 batters over 42-plus innings.
Lacavera batted .283.
Sophomore Jamison Mobbs had a pair of pitching victories and a 3.71 ERA, while freshman Justin Walker picked up one pitching victory.
