Lady Gators finish season with 9-16 mark

  • Tuesday, April 30, 2013

For Goose Creek’s softball team, the losing record this season can be traced back to a lack of consistency, Lady Gators coach Kerry Grimm said.
“We couldn’t get defense, pitching and hitting to work at the same time,” she said. ”When we did, we were very successful. But that didn’t happen consistently enough for us.”
Grimm’s team finished 9-16 overall and 3-5 in region play. A loss to rival Stratford on the final night of the regular season kept the Lady Gators out of the playoffs. It was the final game for three GCHS seniors: pitcher Ashlyn Ryan, left fielder Jalvin Jones and utility player Stevie Hamlette.
“I’m going to have to work with some pitchers in the offseason for sure,” Grimm said. “… We’re going to have to work on hitting. We didn’t have the offensive firepower we should have had.”
Shortstop Bailey Craven led the team in hitting with a .305 batting average. She could also see some time inside the circle next season. Other starters set to return next spring are first baseman Candice Burton, third baseman Kalexia Wilson, second baseman Kali Berrigan, centerfielder Eternal Fuller, right fielder Shakayia Wilson and catcher Kyle Vorhis.
Left field and pitcher are the two open slots heading into the offseason.
