Gators finish with 11-11 mark

The Goose Creek baseball team ended the season with a .500 record.
The Gators finished 11-11 overall and 1-7 in region games after defeating crosstown rival Stratford 14-7 on the last night of the season last week.
It was a positive ending to an otherwise disappointing spring on the diamond. Before the season, Gators coach Scott Durham said he expected his team to compete for the region crown.
Instead, the Gators’ infield made 56 errors on the season and their pitchers walked 92 batters in 140 innings.
“That’s almost 150 people that reached base because of what we did, not what they did,” Durham said.
Of the Gators’ losses, seven were by three runs or less.
Durham’s team looks to be in good shape moving forward, though. They Gators lost just one senior, infielder/pitcher Cody Ward.
Everybody else could return next spring, including junior Cody Smith.
Smith, a pitcher/infielder, batted .485 this season with 22 RBIs, 11 doubles and three triples.
“Only two players in Goose Creek history have hit for a higher average,” Durham said.
Sophomore outfielder Chris Singleton was second in batting with a .354 average and had two of the Gators’ three home runs.
Junior infielder/pitcher Sean Freeland batted .292 followed  by sophomores Michael Cedotal (.286) and Zach Owens (.283).
On the mound, Smith and junior Tyler Rio had four victories apiece and ERAs below 2.00.
Smith struck out 59 batters in 43-plus innings and Rio had 42 strikeouts in 37 innings.
In the final game against Stratford, Rio tossed a complete game, scattering seven hits and allowing two earned runs for the Gators.
Owens and Bryce Jonason drove in three runs apiece, while Dalton Lash scored four runs. Smith added a two-run triple.
