Local judo instructor Al Jacobs made the trip to Virginia Beach then fought his way to the top to become a national master’s judo champion on April 13. He was the only competitor to represent South Carolina in the U.S. Senior Nationals and captured the gold medal in the 73-kilogram division.
Jacobs, who works in the Trident hospital emergency room, is one of the regular judo instructors at the Naval Weapons Station. He is a third degree judo black belt. Jacobs also teaches at a public club, the American Jujitsu Academy, on Highway 78 in Summerville.
Judo and self defense classes are offered free at MWR Joint Base Charleston to active duty personnel, and for a nominal fee to adult dependents and DoD personnel and their adult dependents, on most weekday evenings and for three hours on Saturdays.
The Naval Weapons Station club is the largest judo and largest jujitsu club in the United States Judo Association. Participants must join the USJA ($50/year) if not already members and obtain a judo uniform ($50, including patch). All this is available at the first class.
Contact senior instructor Dr. Ronald Allan Charles, eighth degree black belt, for further information at (843) 553-6702 or check the club Website at www.judostamps.org/samuraijudoassociation.
