Recent reports indicate that too many high school graduates have an elementary education level in math and science. Why is it that most foreign children coming to America seem to excel in all subjects? Could it be that in their country of origin, nothing is taken for granted nor is there any such thing as political correctness?
Today’s teachers are stymied by the PC crowd. If one child in a class of 30 does well, he/she cannot be given a prize of any kind for the other 29 would be “offended” according to their parents. Those little sticky stars that teachers used to put on top of test papers for overachievers: no longer allowed.
I wonder why kids whose parents attend parent/teacher meetings do so well? Could it be they listen to the teacher and ask where their child needs help? Shouldn’t students that excel be given recognition and encouragement?
There was a time when children that could not maintain average grade levels could be held back. Now, that is not politically correct. Should a teacher reprimand a student with anything but a very calm warning, a lawsuit could ensue.
Teachers are dedicated people and it takes the patience of Job to deal with some of the challenged children that all teachers see. They are not psychiatrists or nurses, and they need all the help they can get. Maybe our legislators can vote our teachers a raise instead of themselves.
With today’s economy, both parents – if there are two parents – are working to make ends meet. Love, nurturing and encouragement are critical to our future generation. Time is of the essence.
