Former Stratford standout Bobby Ison continues to serve as the catalyst for the Charleston Southern baseball team this season.
Ison, a sophomore outfielder for the Buccaneers, has team highs in at-bats (142), runs (27), hits (48), total bases (62) and stolen bases (7). He’s second in batting average (.338) and is tied for the team high with 20 RBIs.
To boot, with only four strikeouts he’s fanned less than any CSU starter. He has eight doubles and two homers to his credit.
This past weekend, the Buccaneers took two out of three in a series against VMI. Ison’s two-run homer in Game 2 was key in the 6-4 win. He had two hits to help lead the way in a 7-4 win in Game 3 on Sunday.
His numbers have him on pace to better last year’s performance.
As a freshman, he batted .333 with 10 stolen bases and eight extra-base hits.
The Buccaneers are 14-22 overall and 5-7 in the Big South. They host Presbyterian College this weekend.
A couple other local products also play for the Buccaneers.
Former Knight and current senior Ryan Gunther is 4-4 with a 4.29 earned-run average as a starting pitcher. He was the winning pitcher against VMI in the second game, striking out 10 batters and scattering five hits over seven innings.
Freshman reliever Kyle Dyson (Hanahan) is 1-0 with a 5.91 earned-run average for the Bucs. He’s fanned eight batters in 10.2 innings pitched.
Citadel freshman Skylar Hunter (Hanahan) is one of the top closers in the country for the Bulldogs. His save on Saturday against Georgia Southern was his eighth of the season, tying him for 18th in the NCAA Div. I statistics.
He’s fanned 28 batters in 21 innings pitched and has a 3.86 ERA.
Hunter’s former HHS teammate Bret Hines, a freshman infielder for the Bulldogs, has a .321 batting average.
• Anderson University senior Erick Sanderson (Hanahan) is one of the cornerstones for the Trojans.
He’s batting .268 with four home runs, 11 doubles and a team-high 36 RBIs. He has started all 49 games for Anderson.
He’s also 2-4 on the mound as a pitcher.
Anderson sophomore Evan Jordan is also from Hanahan. He’s struck out 19 batters in 19-plus innings pitched and has a 0-1 record with a 4.19 ERA.
• Two area major leaguers aren’t off to sparkling starts this season.
Baltimore Orioles catcher Matt Wieters (Stratford) had a .200 batting average with three RBIs heading into a series with the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday.
He started off 6 for 14 but is just 2 for 26 since.
Seattle Mariners first baseman Justin Smoak (Stratford) is at .191 heading into a series with the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday. He does have five walks and has hit safely in four of the last six games.
• In softball, junior catcher Erin Schattle has played in 25 games for the USC Upstate Lady Spartans, the 24th ranked team in the most recent Div. I softball poll. She’s got a .319 batting average for the Lady Spartans, who have a 35-5 record.
