Stratford baseball coach John Chalus was proud of the effort and equally pleased with the outcome.
Southpaw Eddie Hiott tossed a complete-game, five-hitter to lead the Knights past rival Goose Creek on Monday night at SHS. The win gave Stratford a 2-2 record in region play heading into matchups with Cane Bay and Wando this week.
“They’re getting scrappier,” Chalus said.  “We’re trying to get them to where they’ll be tough and they’ll fight… We’re still a little weak and a little slow but we’re fighting on pitches. We’re getting the attitude ‘it’s not whether I do good.’ It’s if the team does good, and that’s what we want in the end.”
Cody Smith’s two-run single in the top of the third inning staked Goose Creek to a short-lived 2-0 lead. Hiott kept the Gators off the board the rest of the way, striking out five batters in improving to 4-2.
“He could have folded but he bowed his neck and worked his way out of the (third) inning,” Chalus said. “He’s starting to mature.”
Stratford came right back in the bottom of the third to take the lead with a two-out rally.
First, Taylor Morrison doubled and then J.D. Davis, Jordan Lacavera and Michael Punteney drove in runs to give the Knights a 3-2 advantage.
The only other run came on Asher Smith’s fielder’s choice in the sixth inning.
Morrison and Lacavera had two hits apiece to lead Stratford. Lacavera, the catcher, also picked off a runner at second base in the fifth inning with a key defensive play.
Goose Creek’s Cody Smith was tagged with the loss, giving up three earned runs in six innings and fanning four while walking one.
The loss kept the Gators winless in region play.
“I told them we’ve got to stop inventing ways to lose games,” GCHS coach Scott Durham said.
At 0-4, the Gators have to win their remaining region games to make a run at the postseason.
“If we don’t win all four, we don’t have a chance to get in,” Durham said.
