One of the first steps has been taken to put the Berkeley County School District’s $198 million bond referendum in place, as contracts were awarded to four firms from across the state last week.
The Berkeley County School Board unanimously approved the notice of intent to award and project assignment at its regularly scheduled meeting in Moncks Corner on March 26.
Fourteen firms submitted and four were awarded – four for the renovations and three for the new schools, BCSD Deputy Superintendent Archie Franchini said. Each firm holds the required state licenses to do the work, have worked on similar projects and provided information on their past projects.
The awards were poised to became effective April 8, according to a BCSD document. Two awards are for new elementary schools. The contract for the Sheep Island Road elementary school was given to Contract Construction, based in Irmo.
The contract for the new elementary school in the Hanahan area was given to H.G. Reynolds Company Inc. of Aiken.
Thompson Turner Construction of Sumter was given the award for Goose Creek High School renovations, according to BCSD documents.
M.B. Kahn Construction Company Inc. of Columbia was awarded the contract for Stratford High School renovations.
In other business the board approved a contract for the purchase of 1,125 security cameras. The cameras range from 1 – 2 megapixels and have focal lengths of 6mm or 12mm. This contract was awarded to A3 Communications Inc. of Irmo. The estimated valued of the contract is $651,300.
