It is an eye-catching show. It involves dance after dance, flips, spins and choreography.
Ballet, tap, jazz, modern and hip hop are the main focus for students in Goose Creek High School’s dance program. They visited Devon Forest Elementary School on March 12 to demonstrate their skills in hopes of inspiring their younger peers in becoming dancers by spreading the joy of dance.
The 29 GCHS Berkeley Center for the Arts (BCA) magnet school ninth and 10th graders performed group and solo numbers on the lighted stage in the multi-purpose room in front of hundreds of elementary students.
The first dance performed by freshman was “Wanna Get Hype.” The second dance performed by sophomores was “You Can’t Stop One Beat.”
Dance teacher Erica Skibinski said the students have been rehearsing these performances since January and are gearing up for an April 11 performance at GCHS starting at 7 p.m.
The dance program is now in its third year and has been successful, Skibinski said. She’s taught the program all three years. Last year the dance crew gave a similar performance to students at Bonner Elementary. Each year they make the trek to elementary schools as part of Youth Arts Month.
“The elementary kids were so surprised to see the different dances,” Skibinski said. “There were oohs and aahs. Hopefully it will inspire them to dance.”
Her students practice for an hour and a half every day at school, she said.
“It relieves a lot of stress,” sophomore Daequan Hardeman said. “It’s the only time I feel like I can be myself.”
He has danced his entire life but started taking it more seriously two years ago. He said he wants to make a career of it.
“I want to inspire other people to dance,” sophomore Savannah Bales said.
Both said some of the dances are difficult but sometimes are easy.
Dancers audition for the BCA dance program as rising ninth graders and are welcome from all Berkeley County middle schools, Skibinski said.
Audition packets are available on the school web page www.berkeley.k12.sc.us/GooseCreekHigh.cfm. Please contact Skibinski at email@example.com for more details on the dance program at GCHS BCA.
