It’s a collaborative effort between music, theatre and creative writing students. That’s the story behind the production going into the Goose Creek High School Berkeley Center for the Arts play “Falling Into Place.”
Students are performing all the roles, working on sets and building them together, the magnet school’s theatre instructor Dorothy Smith said.
“It’s a pretty intense undertaking,” Smith said. “I’m proud at how many kids from different places are coming together.”
Two of the students who are composing songs are in creative writing and two others are part of the strings, wind and percussion program, Smith said.
The theatre students have been rehearsing since the first week in March.
“They’re incredibly dedicated,” Smith said. “They spend time here on the weekend and over spring break rehearsing, painting, hanging lights.
“This is something our students have always done. They’ve put in a huge amount of time to get everything up to a professional level. By the time we’re at the end of the process they will have worked on it eight weeks.
“The music is going to be performed live. Piano, guitar and drums will be played by the music composers.
“There are 25 students who are going to be acting, singing and dancing in the show.
“It’s a very unique show. It’s about a couple that was together, they have broken up and are having a custody battle over memories and who gets to keep certain memories.
“Each time the couple creates a memory a piece of paper falls from the ceiling.
“The lead girl ‘Samantha’ and lead boy ‘Cody’ are played by three different actors.”
There are actors playing the dancing versions, singing versions and theatrical versions of the characters, according to Smith.
“We like to keep a mixture of people,” Smith said. “It’s one of the biggest casts in recent memory.”
Smith said she probably could’ve had one student play the entire lead for all three parts but wanted to showcase as much student talent as she could from BCA.
“BCA students have received specialized training in their field,” Smith said. “They work very hard. It’s amazing what they are able to create.”
Student Ian Carpenter is playing the male acting lead “Cody.”
“It’s my senior recital,” Carpenter said. “I’m the lead role. It’s a big deal. I’m going to help construct the set. It’s something to do. I’m going to help do whatever is needed for the show.
“I have been involved in every production since I’ve been in high school. I acted in ‘The Diary of Anne Frank’ earlier this year.”
“Falling Into Place” will be his 14th show at GCHS, he said.
“It’s not portrayed as one boy and girl having a break up,” Carpenter said. “It’s representative of every boy and every girl that’s been through that. Since I’ve come to high school I’ve only ever played the angry bad guy person or angst-y teen. It’s nice to play the romantic male lead for once. It’s fun.”
Student Chase Priest is designing lights and playing another character in the production.
“In theater we have it split to acting and technical work,” Priest said. “My focus is technical work. It’s a big opportunity to be designing lights for a musical.
“To prepare for it you need to think ahead and work with the choreographer and work with actors and the set . . . subtle things put forth mood to the audience.”
Priest said he uses bigger lights for more pop type dances or songs to get the mood upbeat.
“Just because I’m the technical major doesn't mean I can’t act,” Priest said. “I’m focusing on my lines. It’s interesting to do both at once. It’s the art that you love and so you do it.”
