Cobras edge Gators, 2-1, in 8 innings

  • Tuesday, March 26, 2013

Junior third baseman B.J. Thompson delivered a game-winning RBI single to left in the bottom of the eighth-inning to lift Cane Bay to a 2-1 win over Region 7-AAAA rival Goose Creek on Friday night at Cobra Park.
The much-needed win improved Cane Bay to 1-2 in region play and 4-8 overall. Thompson’s bases loaded line drive past a drawn in infield scored catcher Austin Timm from third. Timm opened the eighth inning with a single and went all the way to third on a sacrifice bunt by Trey Burdette.
Goose Creek coach Scott Durham elected to intentionally walk Blaine Peck and Davon Higgins to load the bases with no outs.
“We needed this, real bad,” said Cane Bay coach Shane Todd, whose team was coming off a 9-2 loss to Stratford two nights earlier. “We pitched well and their guy threw well. Both teams had chances to win and we were able to get a big hit there at the end.”
The game featured quality pitching throughout. Goose Creek starter Tyler Rio, a junior, went seven innings, allowing a run on three hits with nine strikeouts. Michael Cedatol pitched the eighth inning for Goose Creek.
Cane Bay starter Justin Shelton allowed a run in the first and gave up four hits through five innings. Burdette earned the win, allowing one hit over the final three innings.
Goose Creek scored its only run in the opening frame. After Chris Singleton doubled to left to open the game, Rio delivered the run with a two-out single.
Cane Bay tied the game in the fifth. Shelton opened the inning with a walk and swiped second base. He scored on Brian Coleman’s single to left center. Each team tallied five hits in the game.
