The Educational Testing Service study, for the Praxis English test, an educator’s licensure test, is being conducted at ETS’s Princeton Campus this month.
In the past, states have set their own standards for the Praxis test. “This is the first time that ETS has brought educators from states together to work on setting the standards,” said Siko. “I am honored that out of all the nominated English educators from South Carolina that I was appointed to represent the state at this important policy making study.”
Siko said with the introduction of Common Cores State Standards for English Language Arts, English educators need to realign their current practices with the new standards. “This is a shift in thinking from each state having specific standards to a nationwide set of standards,” she said.
CCSS has been adopted in 47 states and will be implemented in South Carolina next year.
Dr. Robin Franklin, CSU assistant professor of education, was recently appointed by the S.C. Department of Education to represent the state in a multistate standard setting study for the Praxis I test.
“The fact that Dr. Franklin and I were appointed to represent South Carolina shows that CSU has highly qualified faculty teaching in the School of Education,” Siko said. “There are only three Praxis tests currently being revamped and having multistate standards setting studies done this year – and for two of the three (studies), CSU is representing South Carolina.”

The South Carolina Department of Education has appointed Dr. Kari Lee Siko, assistant professor of English education and interim dean of the School of Education at Charleston Southern, to represent South Carolina in a multistate standard setting study.
