The top three finishers in each varsity weight class and the junior varsity winners at last week’s Region 1 strength competition at Stratford High School advanced.
There are a total of 11 weight classes between 140 pounds and heavyweight. The varsity division is made up athletes 16 and over.
They compete in conventional strength events - bench press and squat - and also the broad jump and 40-yard dash.
The top numbers on varsity were turned in by Cane Bay heavyweight Charles Thompson, who combined for 970 pounds combined on bench and squat. He bench pressed 450 and squatted 520.
The fastest 40-yard time was posted by Summerville’s Darin Smalls at 4.41 seconds.
Hanahan’s Dre Thompson’s 119-inch broad jump was the top number in that event.
On JV, Summerville’s Jonathan James was the strongest, combining for 710 pounds bench and squat.
Xavier Young’s 110-inch jump was top broad jump on JV and West Ashley’s Jamel Coardes had the fastest 40 time at 4.45.
