Smith powers Gators past Hanahan

Goose Creek junior pitcher Cody Smith threw five innings of one-hit ball, striking out 12 batters to power the Gators past Hanahan 8-3 in the regular-season opener for both teams on Monday night.
The Gators had six hits, led by Sean Freeland’s 2 for 3 effort.  They jumped use three-run innings in the fourth and sixth innings  to break open a tight game.
The Hawks had five hits. They scored their only runs in the top of the seventh inning.
Collin Strimpfel scattered four hits in four-plus innings, striking out five and giving up three earned runs in the loss for Hanahan.
Goose Creek hosts Fort Dorchester on Wednesday while Hanahan hosts Academic Magnet.
Stratford 2, Beaufort 1
Michael Punteney had two hits and Eddie Hiott was the winning pitcher for Stratford’s baseball team as it opened the season with a 2-1 victory on the road at Beaufort on Monday.
The Knights scored a single run in the top of the sixth inning on Punteney’s RBI single to right field to break a 1-1 tie and then held on behind Hiott. He fanned eight batters in three innings of relief of starter Chase Fowler.
Stratford had just three hits in the game and committed two errors.
Beaufort had four hits and also made two errors.
Stratford is at Ashley Ridge on Wednesday.
Stratford 15, Berkeley 12
The Lady Knights scored six runs apiece in each of the second and third innings to build a 12-2 lead and held off Berkeley in a non-region game on Monday in Moncks Corner.
Stratford pounded out 18 hits to overcome six errors.
Hanahan  10, Fort Dorchester 2
The Lady Hawks used a six-run seventh inning break open a close game and defeated Fort Dorchester on the road on Monday.
Hanahan girls 7, Palmetto Christian 0
Jenna Stoner had five goals and Sierra Taylor had the shutout in goal to lead the Lady Hawks.
Hanahan hosts Orangeburg-Wilkinson on March 12.
Hanahan boys 3, Palmetto Christian 1
Sean Brady had a goal and a save to lead the Hawks past Palmetto Christian on Monday. Philip Fyock and Kal Goble added goals for HHS.
