City, NAACP commemorate Black History
Goose Creek Mayor Michael Heitzler recently signed a proclamation declaring February “Black History Month” in Goose Creek.
Heitzler and Goose Creek City Councilmember John McCants met with representatives of the Goose Creek NAACP to sign the proclamation, which recognizes the contributions of African Americans in our country’s history.
During this month, the NAACP will commemorate the 150th anniversary of Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., as well as McCants, who is the first African American elected to Goose Creek City Council.
This year’s Black History Month theme is At the Crossroads of Freedom and Equality: The Emancipation Proclamation and the March on Washington.
