Summerville outscored South Florence 23-7 in the final period Wednesday to earn a 73-59 win in the first round of the Class AAAA boys' basketball playoffs.
With the win the Green Wave (20-5) advances to host Ridge View, a two-point winner over Lexington, for the second round Saturday. The Bruins (9-14) were eliminated with the loss.
“I went to see South Florence Friday night and I thought they were dangerous and could beat us,” Summerville coach Greg Elliott said. “I told our kids they are the best nine-win team we will see. They were super tough but John Jenkins had a monster game and we did a good job closing it out with free throws at the end. We are excited to win a playoff game because I think the first one is always the toughest, but we have another tough one here Saturday.”
Jenkins scored a career-high 31 points to lead Summerville. The junior put up 16 points in the first half. He only scored 2 in the third period, but classmate Christian Kalacanic picked up the slack and scored 6 in the period. Jenkins then posted 11 in the fourth period while senior Brandon Wilkerson scored seven in the final eight minutes.
“We've been practicing hard every day and I got some good shots in during warmups so I felt good going into the game,” Jenkins said. “Now we just need to keep fighting and play good defense. We let them get off too many jumpers tonight.”
Summerville led 36-35 at the half, but a trio of three-point baskets in the third period from South Florence's Daviyd Floyd helped lift the Bruins to a 52-50 lead entering the final period.
Jenkins boosted Summerville early in the fourth when he took a 3 from the corner and banked it in off the glass to return the lead to Summerville. After a Bruins' basket, Jenkins hit his third shot from beyond the arc. From there, the scoring slowed down for a while.
The Bruins only trailed by 3 with 2:25 remaining but then the Wave broke the game open. Kalacanic scored from inside the paint and Jenkins made a bucket on a break that he followed with a transaction play that resulted in a free throw for a 65-57 Wave lead.
Wilkerson then made 5 of 6 free-throw attempts in the final minute to ice the game.
Wilkerson finished with 17 points and Kalacanic finished with 12.
Michael Ellis and Fabian Jefferson both scored 14 points to lead the Bruins.
