Goose Creek set to open basketball playoffs

The high school basketball postseason dawns this week for Goose Creek High School.
The Lady Gators (19-4, 6-2 Region 7-AAAA) were set to play on Tuesday after press time against Ashley Ridge. They finished second in the region behind region champion West Ashley. Friday's second round game would likely be at No. 1 Dutch Fork, the defending state champion.
Subsequent playoff rounds in the Class AAAA girls bracket are Feb. 18, 22 and March 1.
Senior forward Ashley Fields (11.9 PPG) and senior guard Jalvin Jones (8.2 PPG) lead Goose Creek in scoring. Fields and junior forward Shakeia Joy led in rebounding at 6.2 and 4.1 respectively.
The Gators (18-4, 7-1), Region 7-AAAA champions this winter, host Beaufort on Wednesday, Feb. 13 and would also host Conway or Aiken on Saturday.
Subsequent playoff rounds in the Class AAAA boys bracket are Feb. 19, 22 and March 1.
Goose Creek's boys are powered on the scoreboard by junior guard Dantez Bennamon at 20. 6 PPG.
The championships games are slated for the Colonial Life Arena in Columbia.
• Hanahan's basketball teams drew Strom Thurmond in the opening round of the Class AAA playoffs on Monday and Tuesday.
The Lady Hawks were second in Region 8 and the boys team was fourth.
• Northwood Academy's girls team finished the regular season with a 25-4 mark and begin playoffs in the SCISA Class AAA tournament in Sumter on Friday.
The Lady Chargers are led by junior guard Amber Campbell, who pours in an impressive 31.6 PPG. Freshman Katelyn Powell adds 10.7 points a game. Juniors Jaime Davis and Antoinette Davis average eight points each.
Campbell and Davis average 8.9 and 8.9 boards respectively.
The Northwood boys are 14-13 heading into the playoffs. Sophomore Tayvaughn Major leads the Chargers at 20 PPG, followed by sophomore Douglas Dwight with 10.7 points a game.
