Hanahan woman arrested for embezzling

A Hanahan woman was arrested Feb. 1 and charged with embezzling public funds.
Kimberly Crolley Murdaugh, 48, reportedly embezzled more than $24,000 over a five year-period while working as human resources manager and payroll director at the City of Hanahan, according to a statement released by the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED).
According to an affidavit, Murdaugh, of 5756 Murray Drive in Hanahan, committed the embezzlement between December 2005 and March 2010. She was officially charged with one count of embezzlement of public funds, valued $10,000 or more.
The affidavit states the defendant deprived Hanahan of her personal contributions, received medical and/or dental benefits for herself, her spouse and her children while failing to pay her monthly out-of-pocket premiums.
The defendant made one partial payment on a premium in February 2006. Numerous claims were made on an ongoing basis with the city insurance provided on behalf of services received by the defendant, her spouse and children, according to the affidavit.
SLED conducted an investigation at the Hanahan Police Department’s request, interviewed witnesses and obtained evidence attesting to and supporting the allegations, according to the affidavit.
The Ninth Circuit Solicitor’s Office will prosecute the case.
