City wrestling bragging rights hung in the balance at Stratford on Monday and they didn’t leave the Crowfield area when the smoke cleared.
The Knights ran out to a 19-3 lead after five bouts and went on to defeat Goose Creek 36-31 in the final Region 7-AAAA match for both teams.
“I thought we wrestled pretty hard,” Stratford coach Willie Nearhood said. “We had some disappointing spots but we stepped up in some other spots too.”
Stratford finished second in the region behind champion Wando and Goose Creek was third.
Stratford mathematically locked it up with three matches left and forfeited all three bouts, making the final score closer than it really was.
In the hot start, T.J. Deveaux recorded a pin at 170 pounds to ignite the Knights and heavyweight Shawn Peace pinned his man, giving Stratford the 16-point advantage.
Allen Moran’s pin at 106 pounds along with Brandon Washington’s major decision at 113 pounds sliced Stratford’s lead to 19-13 before the Knights went on another roll, pushing the advantage up to 36-13 over the next four matches.
Billy Ackerman (120) and Michael Stickney (126) had major decisions followed by Nick Young’s win by forfeit at 132 pounds. Kemp Shider’s 8-6 decision in the 138-pound match gave the Knights their insurmountable lead.
Both Goose Creek and Stratford will compete in the individual region tournament at Stratford on Wednesday. The team duals begin on Saturday, with two rounds.
Stratford will travel to Lexington and faces Fort Dorchester first before a potential second-round matchup with the top-ranked Wildcats.
Goose Creek travels to Conway and faces Beaufort in the opening round before a potential meeting with the Tigers in Saturday’s second round.
