The Hanahan wrestling team's first season at Class AAA has unfolded a lot like many of the last several Class AA seasons before it.
The Hawks recorded four pins last Thursday en route to a 34-30 victory at Hilton Head that gave HHS the Region 8-AAA title. The Hawks won the last two Class AA state championships and begin the Class AAA playoffs this week.
“We're excited about being able to be at home all the way throughout the playoffs,” HHS coach Ray Adkins said. “Our kids earned that.”
The Class AAA team duals begin on Saturday. The Hawks host three other teams, including a tough squad from Region 7, Myrtle Beach, in a potential second round matchup. Other playoff dates are Feb. 4, 6 and 9, with the final set for Dreher High School in Columbia.
Hanahan opens with Brookland-Cayce in the first round, while Myrtle Beach tangles with Darlington.
Against Hilton Head, Hanahan trailed 4-0 after one match before Brian Joseph's pin at 145 pounds gave the Hawks a 6-4 lead.
Hanahan's Dariell Flores followed with a 6-0 decision at 152 pounds.
Back-to-back pins by Dennis Flores (170) and Brett Maddox (182) pushed Hanahan's lead to 21-7.
Hilton Head pulled within 24-20 with four matches left but Tyler Talacko earned a major decision victory at 113 pounds and Elijah Wortham mathematically locked it up for Hanahan with a pin in the 120-pound match.
“A lot was determined by the coin toss,” Adkins said. “We weren't able to get some of the matchups we wanted to get but our kids stayed off their backs and did fundamental things right, like keeping their wrists on bottom and staying in good position.”
• The Hanahan basketball teams split a pair of region games on Friday night against Orangeburg-Wilkinson.
The boys won 54-53 in overtime, led by Terrell Green's 19 points. Wesley Kennedy added 13 points for the Hawks (4-13, 2-4 region).
The Lady Hawks fell 48-34.
Alyssa Kinsey had 18 points to lead Hanahan (9-6, 4-2 region).
