Goose Creek High School’s basketball teams recorded a sweep of Cane Bay High School on Friday, capping the first rotation through Region 7-AAAA foes with a 3-1 mark.
Both the Lady Gators and Gators won for the second straight game after a rare home sweep at the hands of West Ashley High School on Jan. 11.
Each squad used a big run to take control.
The Lady Gators used a big second half to pull away from Cane Bay, 50-21, while the boys team coasted to a 73-53 victory in the nightcap.
“We’re very appreciative of any win,” said Goose Creek boys coach Blake Hall. “(Cane Bay’s) kids play hard and they have a couple of guys that can really score the ball. But you’ve got to constantly self critique and there are things we’ve got to pick apart and get better at if we want to make a positive run in the region.”
Hall’s team used a 28-8 run in the first half to seize the comfortable lead and improved to 14-4.
“We know we can wear on people when we do things the right way,” Hall said.
Dantez Bennamon led the Gators with 23 points, while Shaquille Patrick added 15 points. Chris Singleton chipped in 10 points and Kameron Robinson eight.
Jiquan Hammond powered Cane Bay with 21 points.
The Goose Creek girls only led by a point at the half but outscored Cane Bay 22-2 in the third quarter to break the game open.
“In the second half we came out and extended the defense,” Baldwin said. “That’s the way our defense is capable of playing. If we pressure like we’re supposed to and everybody gets down the floor like they’re supposed to, we can get a lot of easy baskets.”
Ashley Fields and Sahara Pringle had 10 points apiece for the Lady Gators (16-3). Jalvin Jones had eight points and Semoine Frasier added seven points.
Goose Creek plays again on Friday against rival Stratford.
Makayla Dudley had six points to lead Cane Bay (6-10). Shameque Robinson and Adriana Barkley led the Cane Bay rebounding effort with seven apiece.
Cane Bay was set to play at Stratford on Tuesday night after press time before traveling to West Ashley on Friday.
