Death.
Taxes.
Goose Creek’s girls basketball team wins at home.
One of those is no longer a given. The Lady Gators’ home streak ended on Friday night with a 48-40 loss to West Ashley at GCHS in a key Region 7-AAAA contest.
“It was gut check time and we didn’t answer it,” Lady Gators coach Tim Baldwin said. “… They wanted it. They won.  Period.”
West Ashley became the first girls team to celebrate on Goose Creek’s floor since January of 2008, a span of almost five years.
The Lady Wildcats, ranked No. 3 in the state, rode the play of junior Dekeiya Cohen, one of the state’s top players. She finished with 20 points and 20 rebounds in front of crowd that included USC Lady Gamecocks coach Dawn Staley. She also had five blocks, two steals and two assists.
Jue McElmore added 10 points while Keosha Hardaway chipped in eight points for the Lady Wildcats (14-1, 2-0 region). Junior Jhanice Stokes was had eight boards for West Ashley and blocked three shots.
Ashley Fields had 18 points to lead Goose Creek (15-3, 1-1) but missed a lot of chances from the charity stripe. Jalvin Jones added nine points for the fourth-ranked Lady Gators.
“We were 1 for 11 from the free-throw line,” Baldwin said. “Another part about that is only one person (Fields) went to the free-throw line. It means we weren’t being aggressive around the basket and getting rebounds.”
The two teams meet again on Jan. 29 at West Ashley.
Goose Creek was to host Wando on Tuesday after press time before traveling to Cane Bay on Friday and hosting rival Stratford Jan. 25.
The Lady Gators held Cohen scoreless in the first quarter to lead 9-6 and still led 21-19 at halftime before West Ashley opened the second half on an 8-0 run and never trailed again.
In the boys game, the Wildcats pulled out a 43-39 overtime victory.
It gave West Ashley a 2-0 record in region play and dropped the Gators to 1-1.
Dantez Bennamon led the Gators with 16 points while Shaquille Patrick had nine points.
Goose Creek led 34-32 with 26.1 seconds left before West Ashley’s Donte June snuck in behind Jordan McElveen at the free-throw line to pick off an inbound pass.  His layup evened the score.
The Gators had two cracks at the basket late but Bennamon’s 3-pointer from the wing was off the mark with four seconds left as was Rashard Alston’s putback at the horn.
Goose Creek had another chance to win at the end of overtime but West Ashley’s Daquan Glenn stole a pass with under six seconds left. A hard foul sent him to the line with 3.4 seconds left and he made both to ice it.
