Gators wrestling team opens region slate with loss
The Goose Creek wrestling team began Region 7-AAAA competition last week with a 45-13 loss to Wando.
Gators coach Leonard Covington, who recently won his 400th career match, admits the goals this winter are lower than normal. A lack of experience has been apparent.
“Our whole philosophy all year has been just to get better every match,” he said. “That’s what we’re holding to. Some of the guys got a little better this week. We’re just trying to get more experience and more mat time.”
Against Wando, the Gators’ victories came from Allen Moran (106), Brandon Whaley (113), Brandon Washington (132) and Joshua Washington (182). Brandon Washington had the lone bonus point, winning by major decision.
The Gators followed the Wando defeat with a 52-10 loss to Fort Dorchester in a non-region match.
Moran won by major decision and Dylan Wheat had a pin for the Gators in that match.
The Gators were set to travel to West Ashley on Jan. 16 for their next region match.
