The curtain has come up on the wrestling season for the Goose Creek Gators.
Coach Leonard Covington’s team opens the season Wednesday night at home against Burke.
Though it’s mostly an inexperienced team as far as starters are concerned, Covington said it’s a group that’s going to get better as the season goes along.
“The guys are working very hard and are fun to coach,” Covington said. “Our goals are to have a winning record and make the playoffs again.”
The Gators bring back two returning starters in Reggie Smith (126) and T.J. Lewis (145).
Lewis finished second in the region at 147 pounds last season, while Smith was third at 122 pounds.
Other projected starters for the Gators are Brandon Washington (106), Allen Moran (113), Dylan Wheat (120), DeMichael Whaley (132), Raekon Ravenel (138), Austin Wright (138), Tre McCoy (152), John Staley (160), Nick Schott (170), Mason Palmer (170), Corey Wright (182), Darrin McNeal (195), Maleik Ravenell (195), Moises Gallegos (220), Mat Principo (220) and Rico Blanding (285).
The Gators travel to Hanahan on Friday for a meeting with the defending Class AA champions.
“We seem to always have a good match with them,” Covington said. “They are very well coached and of course won the AA state championship last year. I think they are loaded this year and we are rebuilding.
“It should be fun. It always is.”
• Cane Bay is at Fort Dorchester on Dec. 5 and Ashley Ridge on Dec. 10, while Stratford hosts North Charleston and Timberland on Dec. 5.
Hanahan opened the dual season on Tuedsay, Dec. 4 at Georgetown.
