Hawks second, Knights fourth in Cane Bay duals
The Cane Bay Duals are advertised as the premier duals tournament in the Lowcountry.
“And that’s exactly what it is,” Hanahan wrestling coach Ray Adkins said.
The Hawks were the top local Berkeley County finishers in the 18-team tournament, coming in second place to winner Summerville.
The Green Wave defeated Hanahan 42-30 in the championship match, finishing the event 5-0.
“I thought it was a great tournament,” Adkins said. “The middle school gym with two mats allows more teams and kids to participate. They do a great job with it.”
Defending champion Stratford advanced to the third-place match before losing to Beaufort. In the fifth-place match, the host Cobras knocked off Wando.
In the final, Summerville recorded pins in three of the first four matches to lead 21-0 and went on to capture the championship in the fourth annual tournament.
“They came out and did a good job early,” Adkins said of the Wave. “They grabbed all the momentum and we couldn’t catch up.”
The Green Wave defeated Carolina Forest and James Island in pool play then knocked off Wando and Beaufort in the quarterfinal and semifinal.
Hanahan swept Battery Creek and West Ashley in pool play, then defeated Cane Bay and Stratford in the quarterfinal and semifinal round.
“I found out that some of our guys have a lot of ability,” Adkins said. “I expected to be able to compete with some of those teams. They really stepped up in the big matches.”
