Knights complete season sweep of Ashley Ridge

Stratford’s Demetre Rivers takes a jump shot Friday.

Nine games into the season, Stratford boys basketball coach Troy Johnson likes the consistency his team is showing on both ends of the floor.
The Knights improved to 6-3 with a 60-49 victory over Ashley Ridge on Friday night at ARHS.
“It was a great win,” Johnson said. “That was our first time winning over there. It’s a hostile atmosphere but we came out and shot the ball well and got some momentum early.”
The Knights jumped out to a 22-10 lead after a quarter and posted their second win over Ashley Ridge this season. The first one came in overtime, 52-48, on Nov. 27. The win ended a two-game skid for the Knights, who were coming off losses to Hanahan (77-71) and Military Magnet (59-50).
Ashley Ridge closed the gap to 33-28 at the break but Stratford was able to pull away again in the second half.
“We hit some shots down the stretch,” Johnson said. “The biggest thing was we set a good pace on offense and that allowed us to get the shots we wanted.”
Demetre Rivers led the Knights with 22 points, while Vernon Lowndes added 19 points. Markel Epps chipped in eight. Ashley Ridge (5-2) was led by Fred Weeks with 17 points and Mikey Goodwine with 11.
Stratford was set to travel to Fort Dorchester on Tuesday after press time before hosting Timberland on Thursday. They will then play in the annual Roundball Classic at North Charleston High School after Christmas.
“This is a big week,” Johnson said. “Being able to go into the Roundball at 8-3 would be fantastic. But we’ve got to beat two good teams in the Lowcountry first.”
They begin play in the Roundball against Mt. St. Joseph of Baltimore on Dec. 27.
• The Stratford girls dropped their game with Ashley Ridge, 34-21, to fall to 2-4 on the season. McKenzie Yon led the way for the Lady Knights with eight points.
Stratford made substantial progress from the first meeting with Ashley Ridge, which won that game 53-16.
The Lady Knights won their first two games of the season Dec. 7 and 12, beating Military Magnet 41-25 and 34-32.
In the second win over Military Magnet, Yon had 15 points and the Lady Knights outscored the Lady Eagles 15-6 in the fourth quarter to pull out the close victory.
