Lady Gators edge out Summerville

  • Monday, January 14, 2013

The Lady Gators won a spirited game at Summerville Friday.
Goose Creek improved to 13-2 on the season with a 37-30 win over the Lady Green Wave, which dropped to 9-5. The Lady Gators two losses both came to teams from out of state.
Goose Creek jumped out to a 7-3 lead but Summerville fought back to trail by only two points entering the second period. Both teams pushed the tempo in the second period but Summerville made more than twice the turnovers as Goose Creek and the Lady Gators took a 17-11 lead into the half.
The Lady Wave found its stride early in the second half to cut the lead down to four. It looked like Summerville was going to seize momentum, but the Lady Gators kept their composure and prevented the shift.
Goose Creek carried a 26-21 lead into the final period and then matched Summerville’s offensive production.
“All year I’ve been preaching to my team that when you get in a tight game it is important to maintain a lead if you get it,” Goose Creek coach Tim Baldwin said. “We tend to stay wide open so I’ve been stressing to my point guard that when we are ahead sometimes she needs to control the movement of the ball. We’ve been working hard on it and I think that showed tonight. Summerville is one of the better teams in the area and once they get their player back who is injured I expect them to do well this year.”
The holiday tournament season saw the return of one starter for Summerville as Kwanza Murray returned to the lineup. But another, Ashley Green, is now out of the lineup due to a leg injury.
Goose Creek guard Ashley Fields led all scorers in the game with 16 points. Jalvin Jones added 6 for the Lady Gators. Goose Creek scored 15 of its points at the free-throw line.
Murray led Summerville with 9 points while Zuri Green added 6 for the Lady Wave.
