Student supports referendum

Dear Editor:

My name is Chris Piedmont and I’m a current Junior Communication major at the College of Charleston and a product of a Berkeley County School District education.
As a 2010 graduate of Hanahan High School, I had the pleasure of being taught by some of South Carolina’s best teachers.
The years I spent in Hanahan schools have shaped and molded me into the man I am today by providing me with learning experiences not only within the classroom but outside, as well.
My education from Berkeley County didn’t stop when I received my diploma in June of 2010. When I decided I wanted to pursue a career in communication, I turned to the place that taught me everything I know, the Berkeley County School District, and was able to work as an intern this summer learning from the district’s communications team. Were it not for the education, advice, and guidance I received during my tenure as a student and intern with the district, I would not be where I am today or as well positioned for the job market I will enter in just a year and half.
It is for these reasons, that I am an ardent supporter of the passage of the school improvement referendum because every child in Berkeley County deserves to have the caliber of education that I received! Students shouldn’t have to be packed into classes where one teacher must teach a class of over 30 students. I’ve been in classrooms where this was the only option; it’s not a good learning environment for students nor is it a good educating environment for teachers.
On Nov. 6, the power rests within our hands to make sure that we can alleviate the problems associated with overcrowding.
So, fellow citizens, I urge you to go to the polls and vote “Yes” for the school improvement referendum. Together, we can make Berkeley County schools the best they can be!

Chris Piedmont
