Heitzler supports school referendum

As a longtime educator, both in the classroom and the administrative offices, I have a career’s worth of commitment to improving opportunities for the students of Berkeley County. I taught and administered at Goose Creek High School, and I retired in 2006 after 32 years as principal of Westview Elementary School.
Although I no longer participate in the daily in-school duties, my passion for a better learning environment never wavers. Inadequate school facilities, especially overcrowding halls and classrooms, dim the academic opportunities for our children and youth. Sadly, 13 of our district schools are near or beyond capacity. Our children deserve better.
For example, Goose Creek High School was built a half-century ago as an elementary school. Thus today, 18-year-olds are using classrooms designed for 5-year-olds. The School Improvement Referendum will increase classroom space to accommodate the school’s older population, and it will provide for modern technology, especially in the computer and science labs. More information is available at www.yes4schools2012.com.
Passing this referendum will enable significant improvements to 29 Berkeley schools, including several educational facilities in Goose Creek that are long overdue for upgrades. The referendum will also allow the school district to build five new schools to accommodate burgeoning populations district-wide.
The City of Goose Creek was recently recognized as “the best place in South Carolina to raise children.” I believe that honor is the highest accolade for any community, and one which depends upon safe streets, recreational opportunities for all age groups and excellent schools. This is a status that we must work to keep. That’s why I will be voting Yes 4 Schools on Nov. 6.

Michael J. Heitzler, Ed.D, is the Mayor of Goose Creek.
