Cobras make playoffs, face No. 2 seed South Pointe

The Cane Bay Cobras enter the Class AAAA playoffs with momentum after knocking off West Ashley 19-11 on Friday night.
The Cobras (6-5) had lost four in a row but got off the slide against the Wildcats and made the postseason in their first season in Class AAAA football.
“We feel good about making the playoffs,” CBHS coach Russell Zehr said. “That’s everybody’s goal when the season begins.”
Zehr’s team is the No. 15 seed in the Div. II bracket and travels to second-seeded South Pointe. The Stallions (10-1) won Region 3-AAAA.
“They’re very athletic and very good at what they do,” Zehr said of the Rock Hill-area school. “They remind me of Ashley Ridge and Wando as far as what they do on offense. They’re really big up front and they’ve got good receivers and running backs. We’ll have our hands full trying to slow them down.”
The Stallions average 32 points a game. They’re coming off a 35-13 win over Lancaster.
“The big thing for us is we’ve got to be able to move the ball and keep their offense off the field,” Zehr said.
The Cobras scored a pair of second-half touchdowns to come back from an 8-5 deficit against West Ashley. They got 140 yards rushing and a 6-yard touchdown run from running back Romante Frazier.
Quarterback Shon Swett added a 6-yard touchdown run for Cane Bay.
The Cobras’ defense limited West Ashley just over 100 yards of total offense and recorded a safety in the opening quarter.
George Anderson’s 23-yard field goal in the second quarter gave Cane Bay a 5-0 lead before Dominique Gaines had a 100-yard kickoff return to start the second half for West Ashley, which finished the season 1-10. Ernest Heyward ran in the conversion to give the Wildcats their 8-5 lead.
Cane Bay responded with a 12-play, 75-yard drive to regain the lead on Swett’s touchdown.
Frazier’s touchdown in the fourth quarter provided some insurance.
Cane Bay’s top three tacklers on the season are linebackers Matt Rudy, Kealon Wheldon and Jordan Newlin.
