Swamp Foxes hope to get back on track against Wildcats

  • Thursday, September 12, 2013

The Swamp Foxes are hoping to get another strong performance from linebacker Tyler Moore (back) this week.

This week the Swamp Foxes host a team that seems to be on the rise.
The Wildcats of West Ashley will carry a 2-0 record to The Swamp Friday.
After finishing the season at 1-10 last year, West Ashley opened the 2013 season by defeating two-time defending Class AA Bishop England 28-6 and defeating James Island 23-17 last week.
The Swamp Foxes, on the other hand, sport an 0-2 record after falling 56-28 to Goose Creek and 45-26 to Wando. In both losses, Ashley Ridge had a strong start but struggled in the second half.
The Wildcats should be more of an even match for the Swamp Foxes, but do still pose a threat. Last week West Ashley rolled up 460 yards of offense.
With returning quarterback Pedro Manigault leading the way, the Wildcats have demonstrated they can move the ball on the ground or in the air.
Manigault has 220 rushing yards on the season but he isn’t the team’s only offensive weapon. The Wildcats have several speedy running backs and receivers who show promise.
Last week, West Ashley kicker Tyler Pentz hit a 46-yard field goal.
The West Ashley defense returned seven starters this season. Other than a couple of late scores surrendered to James Island late in last week’s game, the unit has played well.
However, the Wildcats have never defeated Ashley Ridge in the short history between the programs.
Ashley Ridge also has multiple weapons. The Swamp Foxes have averaged 117 passing yards per game this year. The team is inexperienced at the quarterback position, but has talented receivers.
Tyler Garland and Sean White have been the go-to rushers and run the ball well enough to keep opponents on their toes.
The Wildcats’ D should expect at least an equal fight to what it faced the first two weeks if not a better one.
The Swamp Fox defense has allowed its opponents to wear it down this year, but Ashley Ridge coach Kenny Walker believes the unit has potential. Plus, Goose Creek and Wando both seem to have very formidable attacks this season.
Walker said lineman Josh Spigner and linebacker Tyler Moore are both coming off a very good performance against the Warriors.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Ashley Ridge.
