Coaches and players from the Ashley Ridge girls’ and Summerville boys’ soccer teams are joining forces this summer to help youngsters develop their athletic skills.
This week 13 student athletes from the two teams served as instructors for the first session of the 2013 Ashley Ridge Soccer Camp. A second five-day session is scheduled for July 8-12, also at Ashley Ridge High School.
The camp, for players age 3 through 12, is designed to teach campers the basics of soccer. It is open to players of all ability levels.
“We hope our less experienced campers learn the proper techniques of playing soccer,” Ashley Ridge Girls’ Soccer Head Coach Mark Weaver said. “We concentrate on being able to pass, dribble, shoot, receive, and juggle correctly. They develop these skills while having a great time at camp.”
For the second year, the staff is also having an elite soccer camp in conjunction with its youth camp. The elite portion of the camp is designed for players who are ready to be challenged with a more difficult regiment of activities that will enhance their dribbling, passing and shooting skills. Participants must have at least three years of playing experience and be at least 10-years-old.
“Our Elite Camp has been a great success,” Weaver said. “The players that attend this part of camp benefit from continuous work on their technical skills while developing the movement and vision needed to play at higher levels.”
Weaver and SHS Boy’s Soccer Head Coach Jason Rasner supervise the staffs for both parts of the camp.
This summer 105 campers attended the first session. Registration for the second session is open. Camp tuition is $60 per session and includes a camp T-shirt. Camp for younger players will run from 9-11 a.m. daily while the camp for older players will run through noon.
